The Legendary Anime Concludes a 27-Year Era in the Coming Year

It's the end of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with the production studio revealing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included numerous filler arcs. Starting in January, once the current storyline concludes, the animated series will go on a three-month hiatus until April, when the Elbaph arc begins.

New Release Strategy

From now on, the series will produce a pair of cours every annually for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the universe — including more content, tempo, and pacing of the source material.” However, producers conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which means more related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime had a six-month pause that started in October 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The intermission was for the production team to improve the visuals and let the manga to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The show greatly benefited from this break, and it has been able to supply viewers with countless action sequences, superior graphics, and less filler than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While a few summary installments sprouted up during this season, the benefits of this updated approach greatly outweigh the odd pause in the story. This also gives the original work, which is presently in the middle of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the announcement, this may result in a single installment of the anime adapting one chapter, with some alternatively covering more material or more to make up for time.

This concludes of an era for anime, as One Piece is the final major title to abandon the old-school way of production, which prioritized being on air for almost the entire year. It's the reason why iconic series such as Naruto, and of course itself have numerous side stories, and the quality of the animation can vary widely between installments and the next. Today, anime production is structured in cours, with one or two maximum coming out each annually, allowing for improved visuals and greater accuracy to the source material.
